Double cleansing is the step people adopt first when they get interested in Korean or Japanese skincare, and it is also the step most likely to be applied when it is not needed.
The honest answer: it is necessary for some people on some days, and unnecessary or actively harmful for others. Here is how to tell which you are.
What is double cleansing?
Two cleansing steps in sequence. First an oil or balm, applied to dry skin, massaged in, then emulsified with water. Second a water-based cleanser, usually a low-foam gel or cream.
The logic is chemistry rather than thoroughness. Oil dissolves oil. Sunscreen filters, silicones, long-wear makeup and your own sebum are all oil-soluble and a water-based cleanser struggles with them. Water-based cleansers handle sweat, dirt and water-soluble residue. Neither does both job well, which is why the two-step approach exists.
When is double cleansing necessary?
The short answer: at night, if you are wearing sunscreen or makeup. That is genuinely it.
Specifically:
- You wore sunscreen. This is the big one, and it is the reason double cleansing became standard in Japan and Korea, where daily sunscreen is near-universal. Modern water-resistant filters are designed not to come off with water. A single gel cleanser leaves residue, and that residue is a common cause of congestion people blame on the sunscreen itself.
- You wore long-wear or full-coverage makeup.
- Your skin produces a lot of sebum and you feel a film by evening.
When is it unnecessary?
- In the morning. Never double cleanse in the morning. There is nothing on your face overnight but your own sebum and last night's moisturiser. Water, or at most a very light cleanser, is enough. Morning double cleansing is one of the more reliable ways to strip a barrier.
- On a bare-faced day with no sunscreen. Rare, but it happens.
- If your barrier is currently compromised. While you are repairing, one gentle cleanse at night is the right amount. Read the barrier healing timeline if you are not sure whether that is you.
How do you double cleanse properly?
- Dry hands, dry face. Oil cleanser needs to meet dry skin to work. Wet skin dilutes it before it can dissolve anything.
- Massage for sixty seconds. Most people do fifteen. The extra time is where the actual dissolving happens.
- Emulsify. Add a little water and keep massaging until the oil turns milky. This is the step people skip and it is what stops the residue.
- Rinse with lukewarm water. Not hot.
- Second cleanse, briefly. Thirty seconds, low foam, then rinse.
- Do not wait. Apply your hydrating layer while skin is still damp.
If your face squeaks afterwards, the second cleanser is too strong. Squeaky is stripped, not clean.
What should you use?
First cleanse: Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil if you are congestion-prone, Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil if you are dry, or the SKIN1004 Centella Light Cleansing Oil if you are sensitive.
Second cleanse: SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule Foam for most skins, or Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam if you are oilier.
Everything is in Cleansers.
Does double cleansing help acne?
Indirectly, and only if incomplete sunscreen removal was contributing. It does nothing about hormonal or bacterial acne, and over-cleansing makes inflammatory acne worse by compromising the barrier. If you are breaking out, the answer is rarely more cleansing.
Common questions
Should I double cleanse every night?
If you wear sunscreen daily, then yes, every night. If you did not put anything on your face that day, one gentle cleanse is enough.
Can I use micellar water as the first step?
You can, but it is less effective on modern water-resistant sunscreen than an oil or balm, and it needs rinsing afterwards despite what the label says.
Will cleansing oil clog my pores?
Not if you emulsify and rinse properly. Most people who report congestion from cleansing oil were leaving residue behind.
Is double cleansing bad for dry skin?
No, provided the second cleanser is gentle and you only do it at night. Dry skin often does better with an oil first cleanse than with a single foaming wash.
What about a cleansing balm instead of an oil?
Same function. Balms are tidier to travel with, oils are easier to massage. Pick on texture preference.
