Melano CC is one of those products that people discover on a trip to Japan, use for a year, and then cannot replace once the bottle runs out. It is a drugstore product in Tokyo, sold everywhere, and almost impossible to find on a shelf in Canada.

It is also, for the money, one of the more effective vitamin C products you can buy.

What is Melano CC?

Made by Rohto Mentholatum, a Japanese pharmaceutical company rather than a beauty brand. The line is aimed squarely at pigmentation, and in Japan it is classified as a quasi-drug, which is a regulatory category between a cosmetic and a medicine requiring proof that the active ingredients do what the label says.

The essence is the one people mean when they say Melano CC. We stock the Melano CC Vitamin C Essence.

What is in it?

Two actives, and the pairing is the point:

  • Pure ascorbic acid — L-ascorbic acid, the most researched and most effective form of vitamin C, and the one most other brands avoid because it is unstable and difficult to formulate.
  • Isopropyl methylphenol — an antibacterial, which is why the product also works on active spots rather than only on the marks they leave.

Plus tocopherol (vitamin E), which stabilises the ascorbic acid and works synergistically with it.

The texture is a light oil rather than a water serum. That is a deliberate formulation choice: ascorbic acid degrades in water, so an anhydrous base keeps it stable far longer. It is also why it smells faintly citrus-medicinal, which some people dislike and which is not a sign anything is wrong.

What does it actually do?

  • Fades post-inflammatory marks. This is where it performs best, and where most people notice it.
  • Brightens general dullness. Reliable within a few weeks.
  • Fades sun spots, slowly, over months, alongside sunscreen.
  • Calms active spots, thanks to the antibacterial.

What it will not do: much for melasma, which needs tranexamic acid and a dermatologist. See dark spots on your face for which kind you are dealing with.

How do you use it?

Two or three drops, after cleansing and your hydrating layer, before moisturiser.

I would use it at night. Vitamin C is often recommended for mornings for the antioxidant benefit, and that is fine, but pure ascorbic acid can be sensitising in daylight for some people and this formulation is not a low-strength one. Night avoids the question entirely.

If you are new to vitamin C, start every other night. A brief tingle on application is normal; sustained stinging is not.

Storage matters more than with most products. Ascorbic acid oxidises. Keep it out of direct light, cap it properly, and expect it to darken slowly from clear to pale yellow over its life. Pale yellow is fine. Deep orange or brown means it has oxidised and is doing much less.

How does it compare?

  • vs a Western 15–20% vitamin C serum: comparable results, usually a third of the price. Western serums often have a more elegant texture and better stabilisation systems.
  • vs Korean vitamin C: Korean formulations more often use gentler derivatives, which are less potent but better tolerated. Melano CC is the more direct option.
  • vs niacinamide: niacinamide is gentler and works differently, by blocking pigment transfer rather than pigment formation. They pair well.

Who should skip it?

Very sensitive or currently compromised skin. Pure ascorbic acid at this strength is not the place to start if products are already stinging. Repair the barrier first, then introduce it.

The rest of our Japanese shelf is in Japanese Beauty Products, and everything for pigmentation is in Dullness & Dark Spots.

Common questions

Where can I buy Melano CC in Canada?

We stock it in Canada, priced in CAD and shipped from Markham, so there is no import wait and nothing to pay at the door.

Is Melano CC good for acne scars?

For flat post-inflammatory marks, yes, and it is one of the better options. For indented scarring, no.

Can I use Melano CC with niacinamide?

Yes. The incompatibility story comes from a study on raw ingredients under heat, not finished products.

Why does it smell like that?

The isopropyl methylphenol and the ascorbic acid together. It is normal and it fades on the skin within a minute.

How long does a bottle last once opened?

Around three months for full potency. Judge by colour rather than by the date.
